چکیده

Vertical transport of many atmospheric trace gases is modulated by retention in solid (ice phase) precipitation during the impaction and freezing (i.e., timing) of supercooled cloud droplets. Here we report field measurements of the concentrations of both hydrogen peroxide (H202) and molecular oxygen (02) in time ice. Gas retention efficiencies, defined as the ratio of the observed concentration divided by the equilibrium concentration predicted by Henry's law, are presented. Rime ice collections were conducted in a wind tunnel using 3.2and 9.5-mm impaction cylinders. Velocities were varied between 9 and 20 m/s and ice substrate temperatures were colder than -3.5 øC. Averaged values of the retention efficiencies for H202 and 02 were 0.05 and 0.32, respectively. Also discussed are direct measurements of H202 volatilization obtained by monitoring increases in gaseous H202 associated with droplet impingement and freezing on an impaction grid placed upstream of a gas sampling inlet. The observed relationships between retention and the time interval between droplet impaction suggest hat H202 and 02 are volatilized subsequent to droplet freezing and prior to burial by continued riming. A comparison of the timescales that are expected to govern retention indicates that solute diffusivities inthe solidified roplets are -10 -12 m 2 s -1.

Hydrogen Peroxide Retention in Rime Ice

The extent to which H202 dissolved in cloud droplets is trapped in rime ice affects the composition of precipitation and the rate of H202 removal from the atmosphere. Measurements were conducted in winter stratiform clouds at a remote mountain-top site in southeastern Wyoming, thus avoiding the difficulties of preparing laboratory clouds whose chemical and physical properties are similar to nat...

Formation of Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Hydrogen Peroxide in Electron Irradiated Crystalline Water Ice

Water ice is abundant both astrophysically, for example in molecular clouds, and in planetary systems. The Kuiper belt objects, many satellites of the outer solar system, the nuclei of comets and some planetary rings are all known to be water-rich. Processing of water ice by energetic particles and ultraviolet photons plays an important role in astrochemistry. To explore the detailed nature of ...

Application of response surface methodology to optimize the ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide process for the removal of Reactive Red 195 dye from aqueous solution

Background and Objective: The most used dyes in textile industries are Azo Group dyes. Azo dyes have complex aromatic compounds, low chemical and biodegradable stability. Due to these properties, treatment of this type of wastewater by conventional methods will not meet environmental standards. The advanced oxidation process has been widely used to treat organic matter from wastewater. In this ...

Electron irradiation of crystalline and amorphous D2O ice

We studied the electron irradiation of crystalline and amorphous deuterated water ices at 12 K. The experiments show that molecular deuterium (D2), molecular oxygen (O2), and Hydrogen peroxide (D2O2) were produced inside the irradiated ice samples. A quantitative comparison of crystalline and amorphous ice samples showed that the production rates of D2, O2 and D2O2 in amorphous ices are systema...
